“My story is not unique or groundbreaking, yet it is a narrative that serves as another testament to the power of relying on God. I am not full of quotes on life or inspirational quotes one could post on social media. I am not a doctor, a therapist, or a celebrity with a platform where I tell you about life’s lessons. I am a child of God, husband, father, former law enforcement professional, and…an alcoholic.”

ENDORSEMENTS FOR JEFF FIELDS

I had the distinct honor of recruiting Jeff into his first law enforcement position with the United States Federal Government, after Jeff had successfully led a joint investigation into illegal narcotics abuse by a law enforcement officer. I, myself, was a relatively new manager at the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Inspector General in Tucson, Arizona. Jeff successfully completed his basic agent training and immediately became an integral part of my team of agents – tasked with fighting southwest border corruption. I always strove to be a fair and consistent leader of my agents, and to be honest Jeff was always one of my favorites and go to persons if I needed anything done right and expeditiously. Professional in every aspect of his career performance- I had no idea that Jeff was battling the addiction demon- as he never displayed any of the tell tale signs or symptoms that I had seen before in my professional and personal life. As an Irish Catholic who grew up in Boston, I have had numerous family members- both civilian and law enforcement members who battled alcoholism and substance abuse.
Jeff’s introspective look at his personal struggles within the framework of the most distrusting professions on earth, is an extremely useful tool people dealing with addictions as well as managers of employees who have substance abuse issues. Department of Homeland Security, where I worked with Jeff – did a woeful job of providing any mental health support, substance issue counseling, or feeling that an employee could come forward and seek help with no stigma or career repercussion.
Jeff was so successful as an agent working with me that he was promoted to a higher position in Washington DC and then subsequently obtained a highly desirable position with the Postal Inspection Service. While Jeff battled his addiction, he was extremely successful professionally. Jeff’s success continues today with this book, a raw and detailed examination of what he endured, how he survived and the wisdom he now lives with and is sharing with others. I am proud to call Jeff a friend and I am so proud of the victory he has willed himself too, with the forging of his faith.

Jeff joined the Inspection Service in Raleigh as an 1811 lateral when his wife transferred to North Carolina.  He immediately established himself as a valuable member of our small team.  Little did we know Jeff was battling the demons that many law enforcement professionals deal with, but often ignore.  Though putting on a brave face and being hard-working member of our team, he had an incident that brought those demons to light. Like the warrior he is; he faced them head on and came clean with his addiction.  He strove to overcome them, but unfortunately, they were much too powerful to defeat on his own.  Jeff then came to the realization he can’t battle this by himself and got the help he needed.  Jeff was able to put words to paper the pain, suffering and heartache his addiction brought with the hope that it can help others realize there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  All too often, first responders are afraid to admit they have a problem for fear of retaliation, ridicule and/or career suicide.  Jeff has proven there’s no shame in asking for help.  I am grateful he had the courage to say what needed to be said and let others know they are not alone.
